The Dramatic Story Behind Sigiriya

The story of Sigiriya is one of power, betrayal, and ambition. King Dhatusena of Anuradhapura had two sons, Prince Kashyapa and Prince Moggallana. A family conflict, fueled by revenge from General Migara, led Kashyapa to seize the throne and tragically end his father’s life.

Fearing his brother’s return from India, Kashyapa transformed Sigiriya into a royal fortress-palace. It was as much a luxurious residence as it was an impenetrable stronghold.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya showcases Sri Lanka’s ancient ingenuity. With its ramparts, moats, symmetrical water gardens, and elaborate frescoes, it’s rightly called the “unofficial Eighth Wonder of the World.”

Archaeological evidence suggests Sigiriya was inhabited as far back as the 2nd century BC, with traces of advanced ancient iron technology. The hydraulic engineering behind the fountains and gardens still amazes modern engineers, some fountains even function today during rainfall.

The Famous Frescoes & the Mirror Wall

The frescoes only 22 remain today, depict vibrant golden and blue figures. While some historians believe these women were queens and attendants, others suggest they represent celestial maidens.

Rise, Fall, and Rediscovery

Over centuries, Sigiriya became overgrown by forest until rediscovered in 1831 by Major H. Forbes. Archaeologists like H.C.P. Bell began serious research in the late 19th century, revealing the incredible extent of its gardens and structures.

The Last Battle of King Kashyapa

In 495 AD, after 18 years, Moggallana returned to claim the throne. During the decisive battle, Kashyapa’s war elephant got stuck in marshland. Misinterpreting his retreat, his troops abandoned him. Alone, Kashyapa took his own life.

Moggallana honored his brother with a royal funeral and gave Sigiriya to Buddhist monks, marking the end of its era as a royal citadel.
